Lenka & Yoni: This Wedding Had More Than One Rhythm
Updated: Oct 7
If I had to describe Lenka and Yoni's wedding without talking about the dress, the flowers or any of the usual wedding stuff, I would probably describe it by sound.

What’s Ahead:
The day started right there in the church. Music. Applause. People cheering. Laughter coming from everywhere. There was already a lot of life in the room before the ceremony had even found its rhythm, and then once the priest began, everything settled into something slower and more intentional. I loved that contrast.
The church changed the tempo of the whole day
The ceremony did not feel like something everybody was trying to get through so the party could continue. It took its time. There was a reading from Tobit about two people praying that they would reach a happy old age together. There were prayers, music, a homily that moved between serious advice and jokes, the vows, the rings, more blessings, and finally the walk back out. That slower rhythm did something important. It gave you time to actually watch Lenka and Yoni inside the moment instead of treating the ceremony like a list of things that needed to happen.
This wedding did not have one mood
That is probably what I liked most about their day. One minute the room is loud and people are cheering. Then everything gets quiet. Then somebody laughs in the middle of the homily. Then the vows get serious again. Then the ceremony keeps going. Afterward everybody is moving around for family photos, somebody is looking for a black pen, people are laughing again, and the day just keeps rolling. Real wedding days are like that. They are not one long romantic feeling. They change every five minutes. And I do not really want to flatten that when I tell the story.
Everybody brought a little of themselves into the room
One thing I really liked was how natural everybody felt around each other. People were talking, praying, laughing and celebrating in the language that felt natural to them, and nobody seemed to be performing anything for the room. It just felt like family being family. That kind of thing is hard to fake, and honestly, it is one of the reasons the day felt so warm.
There was room for the serious stuff and the funny stuff
The priest talked about love and marriage in a very real way. He also joked about what happens when you care more about being right than being happy and end up sleeping on the couch. Everybody laughed. Then a few minutes later Lenka and Yoni were promising faithfulness in good times and bad, in sickness and in health. That combination felt right to me. Marriage is serious. People are still people. You can have both in the same room.
I would rather remember the whole rhythm
When I look back at Lenka and Yoni's day, I do not think of one quote or one perfect little moment that explains everything. I think of the way the day kept changing. Loud. Quiet. Prayerful. Funny. Emotional. Busy. Still. That is what makes it feel like their day instead of just another wedding.
Lenka and Yoni, thank you for letting me be around for all of it. I hope years from now the film does not only remind you what everything looked like. I hope it reminds you how the whole thing moved and sounded while you were inside of it.
